Green Building Fund

The Green Building Fund program is one of the three elements of the $240 million Clean Business Australia initiative. The other elements are the Climate Ready Program and the Retooling for Climate Change Program.

The Green Building Fund ($90m over 4 years) aims to reduce the impact of Australia's built environment on green house gas emissions, by reducing the energy consumed in the operation of existing commercial office buildings.

The program will provide grants through two streams of activity.
Stream A targets owners of existing commercial office buildings. It supports retro-fitting and retro-commissioning of these buildings, to reduce base building energy consumption. Grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 are available, for up to 50% of project costs.

Stream B targets relevant industry associations. It will provide a limited number of grants to develop the knowledge, skills or capability of those involved in the operation of commercial office buildings, to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Grants of up to $200,000 are available, for up to 50% of project costs.

Round 1 for both streams of the program closes at 5pm local time on 15 January 2009. The closing dates for later rounds will be published shortly.

$90M Green Building Fund opens for business

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, today launched the Australian Government's $90 million Green Building Fund.

BCI Australia

Are you building a greener tomorrow?

Register today for GBMRThe building sector accounts for 33 percent of the world’s carbon emissions and 30 to 40 percent of the global energy consumption. Green building can help reduce the sector’s environmental footprint and as a result 85 percent of Australian architects, engineers, contractors and building owners have embraced the concept - a finding from the Green Building Market Report 2008.

The Green Building Market Report 2008 is a watershed study on the adoption and ramifications of green building in Australia and the Asian region. It is the follow-on report of the inaugural Green Building Market Report published by BCI Australia and the Green Building Council of Australia in 2006 and includes a large-scale empirical market study conducted by the BCI Group of Companies between late 2007 and early 2008.

Visit stand #91 for your order form. Also on offer is a complimentary copy of FuturArc Magazine, FuturArc is a quarterly journal that showcases the new and progressive in architecture in Asia-Pacific. Recognising the significant impact the built form has on society and the environment, FuturArc advocates for architecture that demonstrates creativity, social responsibility and sustainability. It encourages architects, engineers and developers to become innovators in design and early adopters of technologies.

Eco House of the Future preview

EcoHouse of the Future

BlueGreen engineering (BGe), a recently formed company, specialises in sustainable building design and project management. The company strongly believes in innovation promoted by design that encompasses original ideas; ideas that indeed add value.

BGe’s idea of sustainable building design is unique but simple: a design that reduces construction time, but which also contains many sustainability features and is cost effective. Cost savings made from reduced construction time can be used for investment in a variety of sustainability features. Such features not only add to the bio-climatic nature of the building, but also reduce operating costs. Thus, using cost savings in this way makes sustainable building less expensive.

The BGe design that we submitted this year for the first time for the ‘Eco House of the Future’ competition is a small to medium scale multi-dwelling development. It is based on an innovative modular construction system that uses recycled construction materials. The construction system allows a dramatic reduction of construction time compared to conventional construction systems. It is estimated that the bulk of the construction for a 5 or 6 dwelling development can be completed in a matter of days.

The design also makes extensive use of passive design features, such as natural ventilation, optimal orientation and shading and daylight design. These features play an important role in reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.

In particular, optimal shading design and building orientation allow penetration of direct sunlight during winter, but not in summer. At the same time, building orientation and shading design are designed so that the thermal mass of the interior of the home utilises the winter sun.

This stores heat during the day and this heat load is then re-emitted during the night. The design includes another innovative passive design feature that we will be revealing during the GreenTech exhibition.

Moreover, the large openable north facing and south facing windows included in the design induce cross flow ventilation, which is particularly useful during hot days. It is envisaged that the building will not require any conventional heating or cooling systems. Likewise, optimal daylight design ensures that there will be no need to switch on the lights during the day.

In terms of environmental benefits, we have designed a number of energy efficient features that make it possible for a small grid connected PV (photovoltaic system) to produce the equivalent energy amount consumed annually. Therefore, the design is Carbon Neutral.

The BGe design exhibits also many interesting water saving and recycling features: a low maintenance black water recycling system; storm and rainwater harvesting systems; and water efficient fixtures.

A number of other sustainability features in our design will be revealed during the GreenTECH show. We believe that the show is a great opportunity for companies and organisations to demonstrate sustainable products, services and ideas; and a challenging way to bring forward to wider audience alternative ideas about sustainability.

Benson Airconditioning

The Future & The Environment

We are pleased to be able to offer a range of Benson Airconditioning systems which are suitable for homes and offices and which use R290 - a naturally occurring refrigerant.

In initial testing, results showed a 15 - 22% reduction in energy consumption for a unit adapted to run on R290 as opposed to the same unit adapted to run on R22 - a refrigerant which is being gradually phased out.
