White Bay Eco-City 2050

Ever wondered what a zero-carbon or carbon neutral or low-carbon city would look like? How should we design future suburbs of Sydney in light of Climate Change? Get some plausible answers with White Bay Eco-City 2050, part of the Design Studio at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning.

The project is a collaboration between twenty senior students and lecturer in sustainable urban planning, Dr. Rafael Pizarro. The brief is relatively simple: design a carbon neutral city for 15,000 people (6,800 residents and 8,200 daytime workers).

While the project's aim is to speculate about how cities would change in response to global warming, the brief also recognises that such prime foreshore land is extremely valuable and that the project must also be commercially viable.

Recent submission from Architect Tony Edye

Subject Title: Sustainable Retrofit Education Workshop

Subject Overview: The proposal is to retrofit an existing house in Willoughby to demonstrate sustainability measures required to achieve a 90% reduction in energy and water consumption and waste production while increasing biodiversity. The project will use the Sustainability Street Approach, which is a community based environmental education system as an educational base and conduct workshops on all aspects of home-based individual and family sustainability.

The project would also be available for interested parties to stay in the premises as a sort of sustainable B&B to directly experience the implications of the target reductions.

Subject Title: Pedal-pump & mini-HEG

Subject Overview: The energy in water can be added to pump water up, or extracted from falling water by using this axial-flow-turbine. The design optimises the sizes, shapes of water passages, RPM, ratios & mechanisms to most efficiently transfer the energy so a pedaller gets the most water for the energy expended & extracts it effectively to produce electricity [or just shaft-power].

Now & in the future this has the ability to harvest, treat, move water, up to 2m lift, using human power [& IC-motor or elec.] The M-HEG can use the "Fisher & Paykel smart-motor, a mass produced permanent magnet generator-this is 'entry-level' 12/24 volt generation for RAPS & developing countries.

It started as a big-bilge-pump for a sinking boat.

SRD CHANGE 08: RESPONSIBLE DESIGN SHOW DEBUT

Celebrating a one week gallery opening from 23rd September showcasing the value of design to create our greener future. An inner city boutique gallery complemented the latest group of finely detailed concepts selected from the cream of Sydney’s Universities. SRD convenor Greg Campbell explained the benefit of "Responsible Design" as enjoying all the benefits of "Sustainable Design" plus tangible benefits for Society. Our special guest speaker Katie Patrick CEO of "the Green Pages" delivered a timely, thought provoking and inspiring speech on greener design that received high acclaim.

The SRD Change 08 audience was impressed by a selection of over 16 graduate exhibits featuring all streams of design, fashion and creativity promoting Responsible Design. Ideas range across Industrial design with an Eco Kitchen sink that recycles it's water several times to a Rapid Disaster relief product that everyone wants for camping as well! Architectural concepts include a complete "White Bay Eco-City 2050" precinct and the "Newtown Sustainable Community Initiative".

"Recyclicity" an Interior design for larger scale recycling combines Sydney’s successful "Reverse Garbage" and "The Bower" in one giant building repurposing project. Surprise ideas of "Free Products" with Ikea packaging as the innovative resource and numerous other ideas ready for serious commercial development. SRD Change is now attracting good support from Corporate and Tertiary Institutions a testament to their efforts. We're looking forward to the opportunity to display a specially updated show at GreenTECH, in an environment where design ingenuity will really shine.
